I recently spent a week in Santorini with my favorite group of friends and the island felt like it was plucked directly from a dream. There is a specific kind of magic that happens when the stark white buildings of the caldera meet the endless blue of the Aegean Sea and we made sure to soak in every single second.

Exploring the Cliffside Villages

We began our journey in Fira which is the bustling heart of the island where the narrow alleys are packed with tiny jewelry shops and vibrant cafes. Walking through the town with a group is an exercise in distraction as every corner offers a new viewpoint or a hidden courtyard filled with bougainvillea. We spent our first morning navigating the stone steps and dodging the occasional donkey while making our way toward Fira’s iconic Three Bells church. The contrast of the bright blue dome against the deep sea below is something you have to see in person to truly believe.

The Charm of Hidden Pyrgos

While everyone flocks to the coast we decided to head inland to the village of Pyrgos which sits at the highest point of the island. It is a labyrinth of medieval streets and hidden churches that feels significantly more quiet and authentic than the main tourist hubs. We hiked up to the ruins of the Venetian castle at the top and were rewarded with a three hundred and sixty degree view of the entire island. Standing there with the wind whipping through our hair we could see the vineyards stretching out toward the sea and the smoke from the volcano in the distance.

Wandering the Streets of Oia

No trip to Santorini is complete without a visit to Oia but we made sure to arrive early to beat the sunset rush. The village is a masterpiece of cave houses and high end boutiques that look like they were carved directly into the volcanic rock. We spent the afternoon wandering through the art galleries and stopping for iced coffees at small cafes overlooking the water. My friends and I loved exploring the quieter backstreets where the locals still hang their laundry and the sound of the crowds feels miles away.

Volcanic Beaches and Sunsets

The geography of Santorini is unlike any other island in Greece because of its volcanic history which has created some of the most unique beaches I have ever seen. We traded the typical golden sand for dramatic colors and crystal clear waters that stayed warm well into the evening. Our group spent several afternoons just moving from one coastal spot to another and experiencing the different textures of the island’s edge. It was the perfect way to balance the physical activity of hiking the villages with some serious relaxation.

Swimming at Red Beach

One of our most memorable afternoons was spent at Red Beach near the ancient site of Akrotiri. The towering crimson cliffs create a dramatic backdrop that feels like you are on another planet entirely. We hiked down the rocky path and spent hours snorkeling in the turquoise water which looks even brighter against the dark red sand. It is a bit of a trek to get there but the sheer scale of the cliffs makes it one of the most photogenic spots on the island.

Lounging on the Black Sands

For a more traditional beach day we headed over to Perissa and Perivolos which are famous for their long stretches of volcanic black sand. We rented a cluster of sunbeds and spent the day drifting between the sea and the beachfront tavernas. The sand gets incredibly hot under the Greek sun so we spent most of our time in the water or enjoying fresh calamari and chilled wine at a shaded table. It is the best place on the island for a group to spread out and enjoy a slow afternoon without any agenda

Sailing the Caldera Waters

The highlight of our trip was undoubtedly the day we spent on a catamaran cruising around the interior of the caldera. Seeing the island from the water level gives you a completely different perspective on the massive cliffs and the villages perched thousands of feet above. It felt incredibly indulgent to have our own space on the deck where we could listen to music and jump into the sea whenever we felt like it.

Soaking in the Hot Springs

Our boat captain took us to the volcanic hot springs near Nea Kameni where the water turns a murky orange due to the high sulfur content. We jumped off the side of the boat and swam toward the warmth which felt like a natural spa in the middle of the ocean. It was a messy and hilarious experience for our group as we tried to navigate the warmer currents while being careful not to stain our swimwear. It is a mandatory Santorini experience that left us all feeling refreshed and ready for the final leg of our cruise.

The Sunset from the Sea

As the sun began to dip toward the horizon the captain dropped anchor just below the cliffs of Oia. We sat on the netting of the catamaran with glasses of local Assyrtiko wine and watched the sky transform into a palette of deep oranges and pinks. While thousands of people were crowded together at the castle above we had a front row seat with nothing but the sound of the waves. It was the quietest and most beautiful moment of the entire trip and it was the perfect way to celebrate our time together.

A Perfect Group Day in Santorini

Balancing the different interests of a group of friends can be tricky but Santorini makes it easy if you have a solid plan. We used the Planz app to organize our transport and sunset spots which saved us from a lot of stress during the busy peak hours. This structure allowed us to see the major landmarks while still leaving plenty of time for spontaneous stops at local bakeries and hidden viewpoints.

Morning Hikes and Views

We usually started our day with a hike from Fira to Firostefani which is a relatively easy walk along the edge of the caldera. This path offers some of the best views of the volcano and takes you past dozens of white washed churches and luxury villas. We would stop for breakfast at a spot with a view of Skaros Rock and plan our afternoon over Greek yogurt and honey. This morning ritual helped us get our steps in before the heat became too intense for walking.

Afternoon Adventures and Sea Breeze

After our morning walk we would pile into a shuttle or rent ATVs to head toward the southern part of the island. Whether we were exploring the Akrotiri Lighthouse or grabbing lunch in the quiet port of Ammoudi we always made sure to stay near the water. Ammoudi Bay is particularly great for a group lunch because you can sit right at the water's edge and watch the local fishermen bring in the catch of the day. The octopus hanging out to dry in the sun is an iconic sight that we all had to capture.

Evening Lights and Fira Nightlife

Once the sun had set we would head back to Fira for dinner and a bit of nightlife. The town takes on a different energy after dark with the lights of the villas sparkling like stars across the cliffs. We found a few favorite bars tucked away in the backstreets where we could enjoy a drink and listen to music without the massive crowds. Reflecting on our journey while looking out over the darkened caldera we all agreed that Santorini is one of those rare places that actually lives up to the hype.
